Oh sure, Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner is made of composite materials and it’s super fuel efficient, but unless you own an airline, the only thing you care about is how comfortable it is. Boeing knows this, and has striven to give passengers an experience unlike any other airplane.

The aerospace company decided an all-new airplane needs an all-new interior and went all-out to make the 787’s interior as innovative as its airframe, aerodynamics and engines. From the air you breath to the turbulence you (won’t) feel to the windows you look through, the passenger experience promises to provide something new at every stage of your flight.

“When you go inside a 787 mockup, you get this ‘wow!’” said airline analyst Scott Hamilton, who got to see a demo interior at Boeing’s facility near Seattle.

You know the 787 is something different the moment you step inside.

Boeing wastes no time giving passengers a new experience. As soon as you board the Dreamliner, you’re greeted by an open area just inside the door. The ceiling resembles a skylight, complete with blue LED lighting that mimics the sky.

“They’ve designed this kind of lounge area instead of coming in next to a galley,” Hamilton says. “It really gives you a welcoming area instead of entering into somebody’s kitchen.”

Of course, it’s up to the airlines buying the planes to decide what you see, and some of them way well modify the boarding area and other features of the plane. But even if they muck it up completely, there’s still a lot of “wow” in the 787 cabin.

The onboard lighting is one of the coolest features.

Anyone who has flown across more than a couple of time zones knows how difficult it is to sleep, and to be awakened with the flick of a switch that floods the cabin in fluorescent white light. Boeing’s LEDs allow the crew to adjust the lighting to match different phases of the flight.

The light is fairly standard during boarding and while cruising. During meals it is adjusted to warmer tones. Once you’re done eating and want to tilt the seat back and relax, the cabin can be bathed in a relaxing lavender hue. When it’s time to sleep, the lights are turned way down.

But it’s how the crew wakes you that’s the best part of the Dreamliner’s lighting.

Instead of flicking the lights on and flooding the cabin in light, the cabin will brighten slowly, with the light transitioning from the purples and oranges of a sunrise to yellows, and eventually white against a blue sky. Boeing’s thought is mimicking the light schedule of your destination, some of the dreaded jet lag can be alleviated

Sleep time brings up another innovation.

Gone is that dreaded moment when, after you finally fall asleep, that passenger in the window seat raises the shade to make sure the Pacific Ocean is still there and fills the cabin with sunlight. The windows of the 787 don’t have shades. They use an electrochromic dimmable system.

You can let in all the light you want — or none at all — at the flick of a switch. Of course, the crew has a master switch, so when it’s time to sleep, that guy in the window seat can only get just enough light to confirm the Pacific hasn’t gone anywhere without bothering everybody else.

He’ll have a better view, too. The 787’s windows are 65 percent bigger than the windows in other planes. Boeing made them taller, so kids and NBA players can enjoy the same view as the average passenger.

Boeing spent a lot of time focusing on how passenger’s perceive the cabin.

Let’s face it: you’re sitting in a tube. It’s only so big — the fuselage is 18 feet 11 inches wide — and there’s only so much space you can use. Things are always a little more spacious in first class, but Boeing wanted to make sure even those of us crammed into coach feel like we have more room.

To do that, Boeing’s designers gave the 787 an open, airy design. It’s another reason for the skylight-like lighting.

“The upper ceiling designs are arched in such a fashion that you get a much more open feeling than you do in a typical wide-body airplane,” Hamilton says.

Even the overhead bins have been redesigned.

To accommodate the trend of more carry-on bags due to baggage fees and the unwillingness of some passengers to part with their luggage, Boeing made the bins about 30 percent bigger. They’re easier to load because they lower when opened and tuck away when raised. That should be a big help for people who don’t understand what a carry-on should be and make it easier for the rest of us to stash our stuff and get out of the aisle.

The composite structure of the 787 means the Dreamliner is lighter and more aerodynamic, which is a boon for airlines. But the composite construction means the airframe isn’t prone to corrosion like aluminum. That means the crew can increase the humidity of the cabin, reducing that parched feeling you have after a long flight.

And thanks again to the composite fuselage, the interior cabin pressure can be increased. This means the cabin will be pressurized to an altitude of 6,000 feet instead of the typical 8,000 feet. These combined factors should make breathing much more comfortable and lead to fewer headaches, fatigue and other health issues common to many passengers.

Another factor that often leads to headaches and general annoyance is noise, especially if you’re sitting behind the engines. The new serrated engine nacelles on the 787 make the plane quieter — both for passengers and those who live in the plane’s flight path. Even the fan blades inside the engine are designed to be quieter.

One of the more innovative passenger comfort systems on the 787 is the computer-controlled turbulence-reduction system.

Boeing claims the Smoother Ride Technology will provide an eight-fold reduction in the number of people experiencing motion sickness. Sensors throughout the airplane detect subtle changes in air pressure indicative of turbulence and direct the fly-by-wire flight controls to move flaperons on the wings to counter the vertical motion. It won’t eliminate all the bumps, but Boeing says it will work especially well on the moderate turbulence that causes most airsickness.

All of this technology puts the 787 well ahead of the competition, Hamilton says. He points out that if you only know the standard airline interior, you won’t feel like you’re missing anything. But even the most modern of interiors in other airplanes doesn’t compare.

“Airbus had done a complete makeover of the A320 interior in 2007,” Hamilton says. “But it’s a conventional looking interior. It’s very good, but having been inside the 787, you just get that ‘wow’ factor.”

And the new interiors will make the airlines happy as well. From the windows to the bathrooms and everything in between, the 787 interior is designed to be easier to clean and cheaper to repair or replace.

The Dreamliner is two years overdue and Boeing has lost orders because of those delays. But Hamilton and others say once the flight test is finished and the first loads of passengers have flown on the new airplane, most of the bad memories should be erased.

He says there are likely to be a few more hiccups between now and then, but is confident both the airlines and the flying public will appreciate the new design.

“Boeing is going to have a real winner on its hands,” he says.

We’ll find out in nine months. That’s when Japan’s All Nippon Airways starts service with the first passenger carrying 787.

Aircraft Air Conditioning
The temperature in an airplane cabin is managed, in part, by an Air Cycle Machine (ACM). The ACM acts as the refrigeration unit to provide cool air in pressurized aircraft. An aircraft typically has two or three of these ACM machines arranged in a system called a “pack”. The ACM packs are typically located near the main landing gear.

The cooling process does not require Freon or other chemical refrigerants. Instead, an ACM uses air to cool the air by expanding and contracting the volume of air. This system has some very distinct benefits over a chemical coolant system.

One of the major benefits of this system is that no condensation is created during the cooling process, allowing the cooled air to be used both in the cabin and for controlling the temperature of electronic equipment without the need for a dehumidifier. The working fluid [air] is freely available, safe and non-toxic.ACM’s are very reliable, have low maintenance costs and down-timeAn air cycle machine can also output heat.

How the ACM Works
You might be wondering how air can be used to cool air. Air is first compressed and then the heat removed. This volume of air is then expanded to a lower temperature than before it was compressed. Work must be removed from the air during the expansion. Work is removed from the air by an expansion turbine. Energy from the air is consumed as the blades are driven around by the expanding air.The energy of the spinning turbine can be used to run other devices, such as generators or fans. Typically, it is used to power a bootstrapped compressor, which raises the compressed (hot) side pressure further without additional external energy, recycling the energy from the expanding air to compress the high pressure air further. The elevation in pressure on the hot side further increases the temperature and makes the ACM produce more useable heat. The cold air from the turbine can be a refrigerant either directly or indirectly by means of a heat exchanger.

The ACM overhaul and repair process is necessary to maintain operation. Over time, internal parts wear and can cause damage to the unit if not properly maintained.

Destin is a charming city on Floridas “Emerald Coast”. Situated in Okaloosa County, the towns official slogan is, “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”, and for guests attracted in sun, surf, and athletics , that is exactly what Destin provides . More than 3.5 million guests pass through Destin each year, seeking the finest fishing on the Gulf Coast, the finest beaches, and the most beautiful shorelines.

Destin vacation homes are known all through the region and the country as some of the most attractive beaches on the Gulf Coast, the crystal clear waters off Destins shore are outstanding for snorkeling or scuba diving, or simply wading out into the sea.

Destin began as a small fishing village and has grown into a main sport fishing hotspot. Destin is home to the biggest fishing fleet in Florida, although fishing doesnt always involve a boat. The pier or several jetties supply right of entry to a lot of varieties of fish that live near to the seashore . Casting a line from the seashore is additionally well-liked . When planning your trip and making reservation for vacation rentals, keep in mind the best period for fishing. In favor of dock fishing, the months between April and October are best , as this is the Pompano season.

But Pompano isnt the only fish to be caught from the pier. Live, frozen, or imitation bait will yield whiting, channel bass, sheepshead, blue runner, bluefish, sail cat, spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, and bonito. Some of the best fishing in the vicinity can be found in the Choctawhatchee Bay and the surrounding marshes. The fishing in that neighborhood is year round and brings in speckled sea trout, sheepshead, white trout, channel bass, red fish, sail cat, bluefish, and flounder.

For some added family enjoyment and a delectable meal, crabbing on the seashore of the bay can bring in blue crabs most times of the year.

For sportsmen more accustomed to trolling, the best season for this is from March to November. The arrival of the Cobia in the spring signals the beginning of the season. Anglers from every part of over the region come to Destin to cast their lines at the seasons outset. Cobia in excess of 100 pounds are often caught in this season. Trolling can also beget in king mackerel, spanish mackerel and bonito.

The charter fleets in Destin will escort you and your family out for half day, whole day, or even overnight fishing adventures, so pack your bait and tackle.

For the golfing enthusiast , Destin offers year round courses at affordable rates. Destin receives upwards of 320 days of sunshine per year and the climate is always temperate . There are few better vacation destinations for golfers in the United States. After a day of fishing, golfing, or just relaxing, have a go one of Destins numerous bistros . As you might expect , seafood is the local specialty, with upwards of 20 varieties of fish available to local chefs during any one season. Destin boasts one of the largest selections of seafood restaurants around the Gulf of Mexico.

Destin can be described as quaint town with sun, surf, and sports activities . Its no wonder so many people are drawn to Destin every year , looking for the very best fishing in the Gulf Coast, the finest beaches, and the most pretty shorelines.

Everywhere you turn nowadays , someone or something is telling you to definitely Go Green! Years ago , going green meant with envy, but these days people are getting hip to the fact the environment is in trouble but it ’s on us to aid make it a better place.

Now, I’m no Greenpeace Protester , however I do my share . I recycle. I turn off lights. I even purchased those ugly spiral illumination bulbs for lamps in my house . For some people , these minor life modifications are sufficient . For other people who wish to achieve more, one can find surprisingly many things they can do to decrease their carbon footprint in the world.

Ever consider going green on your vacation? A short time ago , I visited Tulum, a tiny seaside town about ninety minutes south of Cancun. While the jungle makes up over 90 % of the environment , it’s not exactly the green I’m talking about. For years, Tulum has been the host to a developing quantity of eco-friendly resorts. These Tulum hotels function almost exclusively on wind and solar power though several do possess gas or diesel driven back-up generators just in case. Most of the eco resorts do use wind and solar for the majority of their power needs.

In Tulum, these eco-cabana resorts line the unspoiled beaches leading into Sian Ka’an Biosphere, a 1.3-million-acre nature reserve stretching down the Caribbean coast. These resorts present a range from rustic cabanas located by the beach to comfortable adobe-style quarters . Smaller compared to the major resorts in Cancun nevertheless , the majority don’t lack in services . Many resorts like Playa Azul along with Los Lirios Cabana Resort along with the super luxurious Blue Tulum Hotel offer full spa services from beach-side massages to body therapies using natural Mayan skincare products. Almost all of them have bistros that serve delectable , gourmet cuisine well into the evening. The range of choices was a pleasant surprise!

My first vacation to an eco-friendly resort was a couple of years ago in Tulum. I’m no camper, by any means , therefore when I read the quick inventory of effects to bring , my anxiety level went up a notch upon seeing flashlight as on the list of must-haves.

A flashlight? I thought. What’s up with the electricity? There is none past 11pm, that’s what! Without hesitation , many people would by no means even consider staying in a place that doesn’t have full electricity running 24 hours each day , seven days a week. Nevertheless , I was desperate for the escape . I figured I’d pay a visit to what this whole eco-resort thing was all about.

It was 2006 and my first time in Tulum. I’ve been back three times since! My experience was spectacular . Being on the seaside takes care of the worry that it’ll be excessively hot in the room lacking A/C. The lights being turned off later than 11pm wasn’t an issue at all. I had my flashlight, but there were also Tiki torches lighting up the whole property, so yeah, electrical energy wasn’t truly missed at all. By and large , my opening venture into eco-tourism was no different than any other holiday I’d had from the past.

I should note that a number of the eco resorts in Tulum do have 24 hour electrical power , but you must definitely check those particulars before going if that is a priority for you.

The need to be green has reached way beyond the Greenpeace set. Mull it over and consider doing greater than your part.

When you go to Europe and need a phone that works over there so you can keep in touch with loved ones , you can go and buy a sim card from a local store in Europe , But be aware as you travel around The cell could stop working . Also you need to be aware of the prices that buying a local sim card can entail . Sometimes you may be stung by a very large bill .

Another option is to rent a phone but this can also be costly because the price of rental and then calls on top can be very deceiving when first buying the phone . A smarter option would be buying call cards to use with your phone, but if your phone is not up with the technology of Europe or has no signal because the network is not compatible this is useless.

A great option is using a Cell Phone For Europe, especially made for UK, Italy or anywhere in Europe. There are plenty of cell phones like this available like Call In Europe, and EuroBuzz, advertised in the video above. EuroBuzz strikes me as the better deal because of it’s simple payment plan. You simply buy the phone for $49, and then every call is just 79c a minute, anywhere in Europe. It is also guaranteed to work anywhere in Europe because they have a deal with the European Networks that the phone picks the strongest signal. So at some points you will have a better signal than the locals!

It’s a great option for someone traveling to Europe that doesn’t want to be scared by a nasty bill at the end. 79c per minute for every call is really easy to understand in my opinion and even though you can get cheaper calls for some places and cheaper phones at others, I’m a big believer in simplicity.

The Chinese have been in Kuala Lumpur ever since its founding back in 1857. Yap Ah Loy was an integral character in the development of K.L and it is him that contributed to the success of Petaling Street . This Chinese dominated area would be known to tourists as Chinatown but to the locals, it is affectionately referred to by its eponymous road name. It is more affectionately know to the Chinese Malaysians as Chi-Cheong-Kai in Cantonese but till this day there has been no reasoning or meaning behind it. Petaling Street maintains much of its traditional atmosphere, particularly at night when vendors peddle their wares on the streets.

Malaysia is well-known for its big bargains and its bootlegs. Bargain hunters can be seen haggling at many of the stalls that make up Petaling Street ’s infamous shopping haven. Some of the more popular items that can be found include DVDs, CDs, hand bags, watches and clothing. Shoppers have to bear in mind that most of these items are in fact, bootleg versions even though they might look seemingly original. Word of advice, bring a local friend who is accustomed with the ways of Petaling Street to help you with your shopping as hawkers around the area tend to swindle unsuspecting tourists and foreigners.

Dozens of restaurants can be found at the shop houses that originally line the streets. Food stalls can also be found towards the centre of the street selling local Chinese delights such as Hokkien mee, BBQ sting ray, Assam Laksa and many more. Most of these shops and stalls have been in operation for decades. The delicious food at Petaling Street is a legacy that has been passed down from one generation to another.

This vibrant area can get very crowded sometimes and one must be prepared to squeeze their way through a sea of bodies to get to the next stall. Nevertheless, that’s just a minor inconvenience. Eventually, the offer of cheap clothes, watches, hand bags and DVD’s are too great an opportunity to miss out on.

Food is aplenty here with many delicious choices to choose from. Some of the restaurants have been operating at the same location for generations and are reputed for their scrumptious delicacies. Look out for Woo Hin restaurant; it is the only family-run food joint that has been around the longest here in KL. Throngs of hungry visitors also make a beeline (literally!) for the infamous Hokkien Mee (yellow noodles fried with pork, vegetables and fishcakes and smothered with thick brown gravy). The food served at the open-air stall is well-worth the wait and hungry patrons continually revisit it for a tasty meal.

Many other shops here open their doors to the eager shopper. The range of items available here is incredible, ranging from handbags, clothes, shoes, jewelry to leather goods. Petaling Street is also noted for its dazzling display of gold fashion accessories encrusted with precious gemstones! In fact, the whole street is brimming with stalls and that’s where the fun of bargain-hunting begins.

The hotels in Chinatown are very personalized; presenting to tired visitors a home away from home concept! Most of them operate on a small-scale, and are owned and managed by family members. These charming little hotels offer clean rooms and good hospitality to add on to your memorable holiday. Retaining the charm and character of yesteryears, hotels in Chinatown offer good value for money for budget conscious traveler.

One must remember that bargain-hunting only happens at the stalls. A successful bargain for an item you’ve likened to can reach up a fifty-percent discount or more! Proper shop owners do not entertain bargaining but maintain friendly customer service; cheerfully attending to the many change of clothes you try on.

Thankfully, the place has been renovated since; transparent roofs have been built overhead and re-constructed roadworks have made the streets shopper-friendly. This is especially good for tourists as one is able to while away hours of shopping and food-tasting regardless it’s rain or shine. To get there, hop onto the Sistem Transit Aliran Ringan, commonly known as STAR Light Rail Transit (LRT) and get off at the Plaza Rakyat stop. Upon exiting the station, walk straight on ahead and turn right after Nando’s restaurant. You are able to see Petaling Street (or Chinatown ) at the next right traffic junction. Or, take a cab ride to Petaling Street right away and save the hassle of traveling on the LRT with your entire family. Go with an open mind, a growling stomach and simply enjoy the night market for its energizing blend of local sights, food, and shopping!
