KL International Airport KLIA
KLIA , a spectacular feat of architecture combines futuristic technology, Malaysian culture and the rich, tropical splendour of its natural resources. Located in the Multimedia Super Corridor and close to the administrative capital, Putrajaya, the airport is approximately 75 kms south of Kuala Lumpur Drive time to the city centre is approximately 1 hour.

Arrivals
International flights arrive at the Satellite Building and the Aero train brings passengers to the International Level of the Contact Pier. Other international, domestic and mixed flights arrive on the Domestic Level of the Contact Pier.

Entry Formalities
All visitors must posses a valid passport or other internationally recognised document with a minimum validity period of six months beyond the period of intended stay.

Travellers Declaration Form
In addition to filling out a disembarkation card, all visitors must fill out a Travellers Declaration Form when entering/ leaving the country to declare the amount of currency brought in and taken out.

A resident is allowed to carry Ringgit notes not exceeding RM1,000.00 into and out of Malaysia. He or she is also allowed to carry foreign currency notes (including travellers’ cheques) not exceeding the equivalent of RM10,000.00 out of Malaysia.

A non-resident is allowed to bring in Ringgit notes not exceeding RM1,000.00 and any amount of foreign currency into Malaysia. When departing, he or she is allowed to carry out Ringgit notes not exceeding RM1,000.00 and foreign currency notes (including travellers cheques) not exceeding the amount brought in.

The Travellers Declaration Form must be handed to the immigration officer together with the disembarkation card and passport.

Transportation
Taxis use a coupon system and taxi booths are available upon exit from the Arrivals Hall. There is a choice of an airport limousine service as well as a budget taxi service.

Private vehicle car parks are connected by the Skybridge on the Station Mezzanine Level.

Climate & Clothing
Malaysia has an equatorial climate with uniform temperatures throughout the year. Temperatures range from 32 degrees Celsius during the day to a cool 22 degrees Celsius during the night. It is much cooler in the hill country. Rainfall is common throughout the year, averaging 200-250 cm a year. Light comfortable clothing is the norm with lightweight woollens required for visits to highland areas.

Government

Religion
Islam is the official religion but Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Christianity and other religions are also freely practised.

Banking Hours
In all states, except for Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu, banking hours are from 9.30am to 4.00pm on weekdays, and from 9.30am to 11.30am on Saturday. Also, banks in all states except Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu close on the first Saturday of every month.

In Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu, banks open from 9.30am to 4.00pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. They close on Friday. On Thursday, opening hours are from 9.30am to 11.30am except for the first Thursday of every month when they are closed.

Currency
The Malaysian currency is the Ringgit (RM), which is divided into 100 sen. Ringgit notes are in denominations of RM100, RM50, RM20, RM10, RM5, and RM2. Coins are issued in denominations of RM1, 50 sen, 20 sen, 10 sen, 5 sen and 1 Sen.

Tipping
Most hotels and restaurants impose a 10% service charge and 5% government tax on their bills, so tipping is often not necessary.

Electricity & Water
Electricity used is 220-240 volts at 50 cycles. Tap water is safe for human consumption.

Health Regulations
Visitors from yellow fever-infected areas and several African and Latin American countries must produce yellow fever vaccination certificates.

Airport Departure Tax
For international flights, airport departure tax is RM60 per person; for domestic flights, it is RM20.00. Only children below 2 years old are exempted. Charges are subject to change without prior notice.

Narcotics
The trafficking of illicit drugs in or out of the country carries the mandatory death sentence.

Do And Don’t

Malaysia is generally a laid back and relaxed place. However, we do have our own customs and visitors should try to observe these practices when they arrive. Some common courtesies and customs are as follows: Although handshakes are generally acceptable for both men and women, some Muslim ladies may acknowledge introductions to gentlemen by merely nodding and smiling. A handshake should only be initiated by ladies. The traditional greeting or salam resembles a handshake with both hands but without the grasp. The man offers both hands, lightly touches his friend’s outstretched hands, and then brings his hands to his chest to mean, “I greet you from my heart”. The visitor should reciprocate the salam.

It is polite to call before visiting a home.
Shoes must always be removed when entering a Malaysian home.

Not only does the destination leave you with happy (or sad in some cases) memories, it also leaves you with a better understanding of its culture, its people and its natural surroundings. So why not do what you can to ensure that other visitors are given the same privilege. Here are some of the things you can do to preserve your destination’s environment for both the locals and the future visitors.

o Do not leave souvenirs behind:
Littering is never encouraged in any culture or society. Nobody likes a litterbug and most of the time, they get away with it. But by littering, you are only harming and ruining the environment. People assume that there’s always someone to pick up after them but what happens when you’re in a natural environment? Who takes care of the forests and the beaches? Remember that you can play a role in maintaining the beauty and cleanliness of nature.

o Be an informed traveler:
It is always good to learn more about your destination before embarking on your journey. It doesn’t spoil the surprise, it will only prepare you for the unexpected. Look out for information that will help you understand the culture and practices of the locals. It would be useful if you have information on the regulations and restrictions as well. For example, many countries have restricted smoking to certain areas and it would be good to know where you can smoke without getting those nasty looks from people.

o Protect the species:
Many countries offer products made out of endangered species such as turtles, ivory, feathers, animal fur and other products made out of wood. By purchasing these items, you are only encouraging these illegal traders. Like a certain community service announcement in Malaysia always says, “when the buying stops, the killing stops too”.

o Be nature friendly:
When participating in nature activities such as hiking or rock climbing, always make sure you don’t spoil the natural habitat of the flora and fauna. Follow the trails that have been set in place instead of trampling on the greens and keep your distance from the animals. Never provoke them if you want to keep your mental and physical health in tact. Do not litter especially in parks and forests because chances are there won’t be anyone to pick up after you.

o Support the locals:
The best way to learn about the culture of your destination is to put yourself in it. Support the local industry by trying their food and using locally made products. Hire local guides as they will be the best source of information. If you’re purchasing souvenirs, try to purchase those that are produced locally. Nobody wants a souvenir from Malaysia that says “made in Taiwan”.

o Spread the word:
Encourage your fellow friends and tourists to conduct themselves in a respectable manner. Although one person can make a small difference, it would be nice to have many people doing the same.

o Report abuse:
Do your part and make a report when you notice someone being uncouth. If you witness the abuse of animals in the zoo or any nature park, do report it so that others won’t be witness to such cruel behaviour. If you come across touting taxi drivers or con men trying to rip you off because you are a tourist, make a report at the state tourism office. You might not be able to rid the world of these kind of behaviour but you might be able to help someone else from falling prey to it.

You can make a difference even if it is just a short trip. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Be an environmentally savvy traveler.
